Wapatequa Woods Reservation
Dog Policy
Size
224.6 acres
Description
This reservation — which has grown to more than 200 acres from its 20-acre birth in 1988 — straddles the town lines between Oak Bluffs and Tisbury. It serves as a greenbelt outside Vineyard Haven, the island’s busy port. In 2026 the land bank received its largest-ever donation of acreage in its history island-wide: 28.0 acres from Elizabeth Campbell. Her land was appended to the reservation as the Ronald and Elizabeth Campbell Preserve of the Wapatequa Woods Reservation.
Access
For up-island visitors:
Start in West Tisbury at the intersection of the State and Stoney Hill Roads. Follow the Stoney Hill Road 1.1 miles; trailhead is on left. Road is rough; four-wheel drive is recommended.
For down-island visitors:
Start in Vineyard Haven at the intersection of the Edgartown Road and Winyah Lane. Proceed down the Edgartown Road in the direction of the roundabout; at 0.6 miles turn right into the trailhead.
Historical Highlights
- the area of Wapatequa Woods Reservation has very little documented history; there is evidence that areas of the reservation were used as a woodlot at one time
