123.7 acres


175 acres located between the neighborhoods along the Vineyard Haven and West Tisbury Roads were purchased cooperatively by the land bank and the town of Edgartown. The significant portion — 123.7 consolidated acres of frost bottom and scrub oak — is under land bank care, via a conservation restriction from the town to the land bank.

Historical Highlights

  • an ancient way called “Tar Kiln Path” crosses the preserve; production of pitch, or tar, for use in caulking the seams of ships and preserving ropes is an ancient industry and once an important industry on Martha’s Vineyard.
