Middle Ridge Preserve

Size

26.8 acres

Description

Trying to protect the island’s ridgelines is a fundamental conservation goal, in order to prevent the construction of houses which break the skyline and in order to afford the public the thrill of high, long views. The ocean view here is the reward for mounting the hill.

Access

Start at the intersection of the Middle Road and Tea Lane. Proceed up Tea Lane 0.6 miles; trailhead is located on the right.

Historical Highlights

  • Granville Manter owned land in this area in the mid-1800s and produced a varied array of crops including rye, oats, peas, beans and barley; the area that is now the preserve was probably out-pasture for his cows, which were moved down Tea Lane and let in through the barway off that road.
